BACKUPS Feature

Backup (Substitution) Rules Explained

Backup Rules

WHY ADD BACKUPS?

Get points for all 11 players

  • You lose points for 'Not Playing' players if you do not update the team after the toss. Worry no more!
  • Your Backup (Playing) replaces the 'Not Playing' player, giving you points for all 11 players.

Get points for Impact Player(s)

  • If Shubman Gill is an Impact Player, you would not want to leave him out from your team! Now go ahead & confidently pick an Impact Player.
  • Even if an Impact Player does not play, your Backup will replace him, giving you points for all 11 players. You can find the details in “How Backups work in case of Impact Players (TATA IPL)” section.

BACKUP RULES SIMPLIFIED

How to choose Backups

  1. Create a team using:
    • 1-8 Wicketkeepers, 1-8 Batters, 1 to 8 All-rounders, and 1-8 Bowlers
    • 1 to 10 players from one team
    • 100 Credits
  2. Then, choose up to 4 Backups using:
    • Priority order of B1, B2, B3, B4

Note: If the above rules aren't followed, the Backups won't activate.

How Backups work

  • What if a player in your team has the status 'Not Playing'?

Your added Backups will substitute 'Not Playing' players automatically according to your set priority order of B1, B2, B3, and B4.
  • What if your Captain or Vice-captain has the status 'Not Playing'?

Your added Backup will replace the Captain or Vice-captain if they are 'Not Playing,' and the Backup will then be assigned as the new Captain or Vice-captain.
  • What if more than one player has the status 'Not Playing'?

The following players are substituted in this exact order:
    • Captain
    • Vice-captain
    • Player with the highest Credits
If there are multiple 'Not Playing' members with the highest Credits, the following order is used to select a replacement:
      1. Batter
      2. All-rounder
      3. Wicketkeeper
      4. Bowler

Note: If multiple players of the same type have the highest Credits, the one whose display name comes first alphabetically will be selected as the Backup substitution first. For instance, Rohit Sharma would be replaced ahead of Steve Smith if both have the same Credits (9) and player type (Batter).

Let's say there is a match between India and Australia:

Playing XI Player Type CPs C/VC
R Pant WK 9
V Kohli Bat 10 C
R Sharma Bat 9.5
D Warner Bat 9 VC
S Smith Bat 9.5
H Pandya AR 9
R Jadeja AR 9
P Cummins Bowl 9
J Bumrah Bowl 9
A Zampa Bowl 8.5
Y Chahal Bowl 8.5
    100
Backups Player Type CPs Order
K L Rahul Bat 9.5 S1
K Jadhav AR 9 S2
A Finch Bat 9.5 S3
S Samson WK 9 S4

Suppose Hardik Pandya is 'Not Playing':

  • Step 1: Check if B1 = KL Rahul (9.5) can replace H Pandya (9)
    • Not possible as doing so will increase Total Credits to 100.5
  • Step 2: Check if B2 = K Jadhav (9) can replace H Pandya (9)
    • Possible as K Jadhav has as many Credits (9) as Hardik Pandya
    • Hence, K Jadhav replaces H Pandya in the team

Suppose R Sharma, R Pant, and D Warner are 'Not Playing':

  • Step 1: Check if any of the 'Not Playing' member is the Captain
    • No, hence we move to the next step
  • Step 2: Check if any of the Not Playing member is the Vice-Captain
    • Yes, David Warner is the Vice-captain, and so, he is considered for Backup substitution first.
    • B1 = KL Rahul (9.5) cannot replace D Warner (9) as selecting him takes the Total Credits to 100.5. You need someone whose Credits are not more than D Warner's
    • B2 = K Jadhav (9) replaces D Warner (9) as your Total Credits remain under the limit
  • Step 3: Check the players who are 'Not Playing' and have the highest Credits
    • R Sharma is assigned more Credits than R Pant, so he will be considered for Backup substitution first
    • B1 = KL Rahul (9.5) replaces R Sharma (9.5)
  • Step 4: Check the remaining players
    • Only Rishabh Pant is yet to be replaced
    • Rishabh Pant is considered for replacement with B3 = Aaron Finch, but it is mandatory to have at least one WK - hence, B4 = Sanju Samson (9) replaces R Pant (9)
  • Step 5: If Captain or Vice-Captain was replaced, the Backup with the highest priority will become the Captain or Vice-Captain
    • KL Rahul becomes the Vice-Captain of the team

Note: If Sanju Samson had more Credits than Pant or wasn't a wicketkeeper, Pant couldn't have been replaced. You'd then have to play with a team of 10 'Playing' and 1 'Not Playing' cricketer.

How Backups work in case of Impact Players (TATA IPL)

Let's take the case of the 43rd match of the TATA IPL 2024 between Delhi and Mumbai to understand this in detail.

Mumbai chose to bowl first. Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir were among the Impact Players. When it was their turn to bat, Mumbai brought in Suryakumar Yadav (Impact Player) for Nuwan Thushara who was already in the Playing XI.

Case 1: You picked Impact Player in your team

Suppose you picked an Impact Player in your fantasy team (starting XI) and added a ‘Playing’ player as your Backup (B1). Once the match starts, the Impact Player will be replaced by the Backup provided the create team rules are followed. The Backup will start scoring points for your team.

  • Case 1.1: Impact Player comes to play

    • When the Impact Player selected by you comes to play, he will be substituted back in your team, replacing the Backup (B1) that replaced him initially.
    • The Impact Player will start scoring points for your team, and the points scored by the Backup will not be counted anymore; your starting XI holds the highest priority.

      Example:
You chose Suryakumar Yadav (Impact Player) in your fantasy team and added Tim David (Playing) as B1.
Once the match starts, David will replace Suryakumar Yadav and start scoring points for your team.
When Suryakumar Yadav comes to play, he will regain his spot in your team, replacing David. Now, you will get points for Suryakumar Yadav, and Tim David’s scores will not be counted any more.
  • Case 1.2: Impact Player does not play

    • When the Impact Player selected by you does not play, then the Backup (B1) who replaced him will remain a part of your team. The points scored by the Backup (B1) will be added to your team's total.

      Example:
You chose Suryakumar Yadav (Impact Player) in your fantasy team and added Tim David (Playing) as B1.
Once the match starts, David will replace Suryakumar Yadav and start scoring points for your team.
If Suryakumar Yadav does not come as an Impact Player, David will remain a part of your team and his points will be added to your team’s total.

Case 2: Impact Player in your Backups

If the Impact Player listed as your first Backup (B1) was initially ‘Not Playing’ and your second Backup (B2) replaced a 'Not Playing' player, B1 will replace the ‘Not Playing’ player ahead of B2.

Example:

Let’s consider you have:

  1. Gerald Coetzee who is ‘Not Playing’ in your team
  2. Suryakumar Yadav who is ‘Impact Player’ as your first Backup (B1)
  3. Tim David who is ‘Playing’ as your second Backup (B2)

Now the replacement will happen in the following order:

  1. David replaces Coetzee
  2. Once Suryakumar Yadav replaces Thushara as the Impact Player, he will replace Coetzee ahead of David in your team.

Concussion Substitute

In the 2nd Test between England and Australia at Lord’s in 2018, Steve Smith suffered a concussion. Australia had the option to replace him with 'Not Playing' players like Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc. Since the replacement needed to be like-for-like, Labuschagne, a batter, replaced Smith.

Let’s use this in examples to further understand the Backup feature.

Case 1: Concussed Player in your team

If a player in your team is concussed, his points will be counted until the time of concussion, and no Backup or Concussion Substitute will substitute him.

Example: If Smith is in your team and gets concussed, his points will be counted until the time of concussion and no Backup will substitute him.

Case 2: Concussed Player in your Backups

If the concussed player was your Backup and replaced a ‘Not Playing’ member in your team, the concussed player will remain in your team and his points till the concussion will be counted.

Example: If Smith was your Backup and replaced ‘Not Playing’ players like Labuschagne or Starc in your team, Smith will remain in your team and his points till the concussion will be counted.

Case 3: Concussion Substitute in your team

If the concussion substitute was initially in your team but was replaced because he was ‘Not Playing’ when the match began, he will return to your team and earn points.

Example: If Labuschagne was initially in your team but was replaced because he was ‘Not Playing’ when the match began, he will return to your team and earn points.

Case 4: Concussion Substitute in your Backups

If the Concussion Substitute listed as your first Backup (B1) was initially ‘Not Playing’ and your second Backup (B2) replaced a 'Not Playing' player, B1 will replace the ‘Not Playing’ player ahead of B2.

Example: Let’s consider you have:

  1. Starc who is ‘Not Playing’ in your team
  2. Labuschagne who is ‘Not Playing’ as your first Backup (B1)
  3. Travis Head who is ‘Playing’ as your second Backup (B2)

Now the replacement will happen in the following order:

  1. Head replaces Starc
  2. Now that Labuschagne replaces Smith as the Concussion Substitute, he will replace Starc ahead of Head.

Note: Players involved in an X-Factor replacement (in the Australian T20 League) will be awarded points in a similar manner to players involved in a concussion replacement
