All eyes will be on Lucknow’s skipper KL Rahul. He loves playing in the cash-rich league and has consistently been amongst the runs in the last two editions. In 2021, he finished as the third-highest run-getter (626) at 62.60, including 6 half-centuries.
Rashid Khan is arguably the best spinner in this format. While he plays franchise cricket across the world, his record in the Indian T20 League stands out. In 76 games, the Afghanistan leg-spinner has bagged 93 wickets at an incredible economy of 6.33.
Smart Picks from LSG & Gujarat Teams
There are no reports suggesting that Hardik Pandya might bowl his quota of four overs. That said, we know what the Indian all-rounder is capable of doing with his bat alone. Given that he will lead Gujarat, he could even promote himself up the order.
When Krunal Pandya played for Mumbai, he regularly chipped in with both bat and ball, which also helped fantasy players. More of the same will be expected from the all-rounder.
Ravi Bishnoi shot to fame in this tournament by winning the Emerging Player award in 2020. He will lead the spin attack for Lucknow going forward. He has already taken 24 wickets with his wily wrist-spin.
The onus of controlling runs and picking wickets at the death will be on Avesh Khan. Last year, he ended the tournament as the second-highest wicket-taker (24 in 16 games).
See the ball, hit the ball: that’s the mantra Evin Lewis believes in while batting. If the southpaw gets going in the powerplay, he can run away with the game.
Gujarat will pin their hopes on strike bowlers Mohammad Shami and Lockie Ferguson for early breakthroughs. While the Indian seamer picked up 19 wickets in 14 games last year, the Kiwi pacer ended up with 13 scalps in 8 matches.
Given Gujarat’s weak middle-order, Shubhman Gill will have to step up and play a responsible knock at the top. It will be interesting to see what approach the youngster adopts this season.
