Power players

Rohit Sharma may not have scored a half-century in the second leg of the 2021 edition yet, but his attacking approach has helped Mumbai lay a strong foundation in the powerplay. With 363 runs in 13 games, he is the highest run-scorer for his team.

Rashid Khan has not gone wicketless in the UAE this year. Overall, he has grabbed 16 wickets with an impressive economy of 6.44. He is likely to be pitted against the likes of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard in the middle overs. Given the slow nature of the wicket, launching an attack against him will be an uphill task.

Ishan Kishan’s role is well-defined: he will fire on all cylinders no matter what situation he is in. He was on 1 off 7 and ended up scoring 50* off 25, boosting Mumbai’s net run-rate. Expect nothing less on Friday.

Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling figures in the last 6 matches read 2/33, 3/43, 3/36, 2/24, 1/29, and 2/24. Need we say more?

Smart picks

Rahul Chahar picked up a three-wicket haul in the previous game against Hyderabad. Given the fact that Hyderabad have only one left-hander in their line-up, Chahar’s leg-spinners will be difficult to deal with.

In the same game, Kieron Pollard was adjudged Player of the Match for his unbeaten 35 off 22. The nature of the wicket does not concern the big man. He dispatches anything pitched in his arc.

Kane Williamson has a half-century and two scores in excess of 25 runs in the last four matches. He has been smart in his shot selections on these sluggish wickets.

Jason Holder has taken 12 wickets in a mere 7 matches, maintaining an economy of 7 RPO. He is a fantasy player’s delight, as he bowls in the powerplay as well as at the death.

Prediction

Mumbai will look to bowl and finish off Hyderabad for a paltry score, and chase it down in as few overs as they can. Their net run-rate remains a concern. However, if Kolkata lose on Thursday and Mumbai emerge triumphant against Hyderabad, Mumbai will qualify for the playoffs.

On the other hand, Hyderabad have nothing to lose and nowhere to go. Concluding the campaign on a winning note would be all for them.
