The International Cricket Council (ICC) released a statement declaring that they are scrapping the boundary count in the Super Over for semi-finals and finals at ICC events. This a result of what transpired at the finals of the Cricket World Cup 2019. Do you remember the uproar that occurred? Let us recap what happened.

New Zealand and England reached the finals of the 2019 World Cup. The score was a tie, so the game went into Super Over, which also resulted in a tie. However, England was declared the winner of the World Cup based scoring the most number of boundaries. Though it was their maiden win, it was shadowed with an upheaval from the cricketing community.

So, the ICC Cricket Committee, which is led by Anil Kumble, the former Indian skipper, took notice of it and recommended the Chief Executives’ Committee to change this rule. On Monday, they agreed to overturn it. They decided that the use of the Super Over as a way to decide results at ICC events—ODI and T20I World Cups, will be retained. However, in semi-finals and finals, when the match goes into Super-Over, it will continue till one team scores more runs than the other.

The statement that the ICC released reiterates their stance, “In Semi-finals and Finals, there is one change to the Super Over regulation in keeping with the basic principle of scoring more runs than the opponent to win, the Super Over will be repeated until one team has more runs than the other.”

It also said that “Following on from a recommendation from the ICC Cricket Committee, the Chief Executives’ Committee agreed that the use of the Super Over as a way to decide results at ICC events will be retained. Both the Cricket Committee and CEC agreed it was an exciting and engaging conclusion to the game and will remain in place covering all games at both ODI and T20I World Cups.”

When it comes to Group Stages in ICC games, the Super Over will be introduced here too in order to select the winning team. However, the Super Over will not be repeated after the tie, and the points will be divided between the teams.

These are significant rules that will define the future of ICC cricketing tournaments. It can tilt the scale in favour of the deserving team.
