Preview

Trailblazers beat Supernovas. Velocity beat Trailblazers. Will Supernovas beat Velocity and complete the circle? If that happens, each team will win one game and the net run rate will come into play. Trailblazers’ net run rate (-0.305) reads the worst, and for all the right reasons, they will be rooting for Velocity’s victory in tonight’s contest.

Supernovas will take time to move on from their defeat against Trailblazers in the tournament opener. Captain Harmanpreet was at the crease when they needed 19 off the last over. She was pitted against her Team India colleague Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in ODIs.

Although the pressure was more on Supernovas, Harmanpreet batted as if she had nothing to lose. She picked four fours off the first five balls, bringing down the equation to 3 needed off 1. Jhulan bowled a length ball on off, and in the process of powering it, Harmanpreet missed it completely. So near, yet so far.

Supernovas did not play that bad, come to think of it. Despite Smriti Mandhana’s 90 off 67, they restricted Trailblazers to 140 for 5. In reply, Atapattu and Rodrigues steadied the ship with a 49-run stand after losing Punia in the second over. That said, they – including Harmanpreet later – were accumulating runs at a slow pace and that eventually led to their downfall. They will have to make sure they keep the scorecard ticking against Velocity.

Velocity would have won the game against Trailblazers easily, but they lost the plot when they were on the brink of victory. Needing a mere 2 runs in 26 balls, they lost as many as 5 wickets in 7 balls. In came Pradhan at No. 9 and picked 2 runs to end the drama.

If anything, all the matches thus far have kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. Wyatt (46 runs) was the highest scorer for them, with Shefali (34) and Mithali (17) playing second fiddle.

Having taken 2 wickets each, Radha, Ekta, and Amelia will be the bowlers to watch out for.
