Top Fantasy Picks from the Team
Marcus Stoinis – The Aussie all-rounder had a stellar 2024 season with Lucknow. His ability to bat anywhere from number 1 to number 6 and provide four quality overs of medium pace makes him a very useful resource for Punjab.
Shreyas Iyer – The batter has been in terrific form in white ball cricket in 2025 and will be the lynchpin around whom the batting lineup will revolve.
Arshdeep Singh – In a very short span of time, the left armer has risen up the ladder to become India’s most successful pacer in T20Is. His death bowling makes him an asset and that’s why Punjab dished out 18 crore to get him back in TATA IPL 2025.
Glenn Maxwell – Eleven years after his first season with Punjab that launched him into the stratosphere, Maxwell still remains as dangerous a batter as ever. He would look to recreate the 2014 magic again in TATA IPL 2025.
Yuzvendra Chahal – Out of favor from the national setup, Yuzi Chahal still remains a potent force with the ball and his 66 wickets in the last 3 seasons is the reason Punjab showed such desperation to acquire his services.

SWOT Analysis of Punjab
In 2025, the team will look once again to start afresh with last year’s title winning captain Shreyas Iyer and a universally respected coach Ricky Ponting. The two had worked together at Delhi too and were responsible for taking the team to the Final.
Strengths – The team’s strength lies in its bevy of all-rounders. The two Aussie all-rounders, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, are a great addition in any T20 team. Add to that the tall South African Marco Jansen, who has been proving to be as effective with his big-hitting as with his powerplay bowling and Punjab have half of their problems taken care of.
Weaknesses – The team’s opening pair for the seasons still remains a mystery. While they showed faith in Prabhsimran Singh, it will be interesting to see who he pairs up with at the top. While Jos Inglis showed good form in the Champions Trophy, picking him might mean sacrificing one of the all-rounders. Apart from Inglis, Stoinis also remains an opening option but doesn’t open the batting regularly.
While the team began the auction with big money, the lack of openers who can make an impact reveal that they might have once again made mistakes right at the beginning.
Punjab Team in TATA IPL 2025
The Punjab team has been one of the biggest enigmas of the league. The franchise started as one of the favorites when the league began in 2008 but hasn’t been in the playoffs even for a decade now. In 2024, they began the season with Shikhar Dhawan as their skipper but the southpaw’s injury saw them opting for English all-rounder Sam Curran as their skipper. While their campaign had some moments, especially when they completed the highest chase in the history of the tournament against Kolkata, it never really took off and they finished 9th on the points table. Another disappointing showing led to the team releasing most of its players into the auction pool and holding on to only two batters – Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. The team went on to also announce a new coach as they brought on board Ricky Ponting who was associated with Delhi for a long period before this.
The team came to the auction table with a big purse and just like it had done in the past, it went on a shopping spree. It spent 26.75 crores to get the services of Shreyas Iyer, who had won the title with Kolkata last year, and even announced him as the new captain. The team also brought back star bowler Arshdeep Singh while paying a huge sum of money to get leggie Yuzvendra Chahal in the auctions too. The team also spent big to get several overseas all-rounders – Azmatullah Omarzai, Marco Jansen and Marcus Stoinis. Very interestingly, just a few weeks after Glenn Maxwell wrote about his fallout with the team’s ex-mentor Virender Sehwag, he was also picked by the franchise at the auction. With Shreyas Iyer as their skipper, who has been winning trophies consistently as a skipper in the last 18 months, the team can hope to put up a strong show and at least make it to the playoffs.

Brief History of Punjab
Punjab was one of the eight original teams the league began with in 2008. With a Bollywood star as its owner and Yuvraj Singh as the team’s captain, there was a lot of buzz around the team. The team had a decent first tournament with star players like Brett Lee and Kumar Sangakkara involved. On the back of Shaun Marsh’s marathon season with the bat the team made it to the semi-final but lost to Chennai. The team failed to achieve any success in the subsequent years despite moving on from Yuvraj Singh to Kumar Sangakkara to Adam Gilchrist as their captain.
It was only in 2014 when the team found its mojo again as Glenn Maxwell and David Miller formed an unforgettable partnership for them in the middle order that took them to the final of the tournament. Despite posting a big total, the team lost the final to Kolkata. Such has been the team’s performance in the subsequent seasons that it has never managed to make it to the top four after that despite making many coach-captain changes. The team assembled a strong squad in 2022 but still could only manage 7 wins which didn’t prove to be good enough to take them into the top 4. Despite changing the captain, the team’s performance slipped further in the next two seasons.
