Sachin Tendulkar, the maestro of international centuries, enjoyed a remarkable career spanning 23 years as a former India captain, amassing an impressive total of 49 ODI centuries. What’s even more astounding is that 35 of Sachin’s 49 ODI tons led his team to victory. Tendulkar marked his ODI debut against Pakistan in 1989, and fittingly, he bid adieu to the format against the same opponent in 2012. The ‘God of Cricket’ concluded his ODI journey with an average of 44.83.
Virat Kohli, a contemporary cricket sensation, is a living legend who stands second only to his idol Tendulkar on the list of most ODI centuries. Making his ODI debut in 2008 against Sri Lanka, Kohli has played 281 matches in the format, amassing an astonishing 13,083 runs with an average of nearly 60. His record includes an astonishing 47 centuries and 66 fifties. Kohli also leads the charts for most ODI hundreds that led India to victory – of his 47 centuries, an incredible 39 ensured India’s triumph.
Rohit Sharma, the current skipper of India’s limited-overs team, secures the third position on this prestigious list with 30 ODI centuries. Endearingly known as the ‘Hitman,’ Sharma holds a plethora of records in ODIs. He notably set the highest ODI score at 264 runs and hit a staggering 33 fours in a single innings, a feat unmatched by any other batsman. Remarkably, Rohit is the sole player to have notched up three double centuries in this format and is the world’s only batsman to achieve five centuries in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
Ricky Ponting, a former Australia captain, occupies the fourth spot on this list. Punter, who last graced the field for Australia in 2012, delivered 30 centuries in the 50-over format, with 25 of those contributing to his team’s triumph. His maiden ODI century came against Sri Lanka in the Benson & Hedges World Series, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1996. Ponting’s highest ODI score is 164, achieved against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in 2006.
Sanath Jayasuriya, a former Sri Lankan all-rounder and one of the game’s greats, etched his name in history with 28 ODI centuries in 445 matches. Jayasuriya’s ODI journey spanned an astonishing 21 years and 184 days, making it the second longest in the game’s annals. Remarkably, he became the second oldest player to score a hundred in the 50-over format, achieving this feat at the age of 39 years and 212 days against India in 2009. The elegant left-hander concluded his ODI career with a batting average of 32.36 and an impressive tally of 323 wickets.
