Although he had a forgettable 2024, where he only managed to bag 10 wickets from 12 matches, he seems to be in good form and would surely try to be back among the wickets.
Jos Buttler – The English wicket-keeper batter had a long and prolific stint with Rajasthan but was unloaded ahead of the auctions this year. He would like to prove a point by scoring big in a new colour in TATA IPL 2025.
Rahul Tewatia – One of the most underrated match-winners of the league, Rahul Tewatia has developed a reputation for himself by finishing countless matches for his teams. Expect the southpaw to produce a few more jailbreaks for his team in TATA IPL 2025.
Mohd. Siraj – The pacer hasn’t had a great last few months. After being released into the auction pool by Bengaluru, he also struggled with form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and was then dropped from the squad for the Champions Trophy. However, his exploits for Bengaluru give enough evidence of his abilities with the ball. Expect him to give his all for Gujarat with an eye on making a comeback into the national team.

The team didn’t change drastically from 2023 to 2024, but such was the impact of all-round captain Hardik Pandya that the team’s performance dipped significantly. The 2024 assignment was Gill’s first assignment as a captain and now that he’s the vice captain of the national side, one can expect a more mature leader to take control of the team’s fortunes in 2025.
Strengths – The team’s top order looks extremely solid with three batters who love to score big. Shubman Gill has struggled with finding reliable opening partners at Gujarat and Jos Buttler’s arrival could change things for him. Sai Sudharsan has also emerged as a reliable batter who has significantly improved his T20 game in the last 3 years. The team is also likely to benefit from a change in public perception as last year the fans were unhappy with the management’s decision to let their trophy winning captain Hardik Pandya go. The fans seem to have moved on from that episode and there seems to be more acceptance of Shubman Gill as a leader.
Weaknesses – The team’s middle order doesn’t inspire confidence and lacks reliable names at this point. The number 4 position in the batting order could be taken up by either Glenn Phillips or Sherfane Rutherford, both of who are yet to make a mark on the league in their limited appearances. The team would also expect Shah Rukh Khan to repay the faith that has been reposed on him. The big-hitter was retained despite underwhelming returns from the bat in the past few years.
The team’s bowling will be bolstered by the presence of Mohd. Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, both proven stars of the league. They will have the support of Rashid Khan in the spin department too.
Gujarat Team in TATA IPL 2025
Despite being one of the two new teams of the league with a very brief history behind them, Gujarat’s journey has been quite eventful. Formed only ahead of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League, not many gave them a chance when they got done with their first auction. But led by Hardik Pandya and coached by Gary Kirsten, the team won 10 out of their 14 group stage matches and didn’t flinch once on their path to victory, eventually defeating a spirited Rajasthan in the final of the season. They became only the second team after Rajasthan to win a title in only their first attempt. The team almost repeated its first season performance in 2024 as well when they made it to the final after another dominant showing in the group stages. But some late heroics from Ravindra Jadeja proved to be the team’s undoing as they missed on making it 2 out of 2 by a whisker.
However, ahead of 2024, in a trade news that created a lot of buzz, the management decided to trade Hardik Pandya to Mumbai. That meant an elevation to captaincy for last year’s superstar Shubman Gill who had plundered more than 800 runs in 2024. The team couldn’t recreate the previous two years’ dominant performances and finished 8th with only 5 wins. Ahead of the TATA IPL 2025 season, they made some interesting retention choices and bought many new players at the auction. While Shubman Gill will continue as the skipper, the coach for this season will be Ashish Nehra as Gary Kirsten moved on after the last season. The team will start their campaign against Punjab on their home ground in Ahmedabad.
Brief History of Gujarat
The current Gujarat team isn’t the first one from the region in this league. The suspension of two teams in 2016 and 2017 led to a team from Gujarat being formed for the first time in the league which even went on to make it to the Play-offs in its first season led by Suresh Raina. However, the team was only supposed to be there for two years after it was dissolved. In 2021, CVC Capital Partners acquired a new Gujarat based team for Rs 5,625 crore.
Initially, the ownership was held by CVC-promoted Irelia Sports India. However, in early 2025, Ahmedabad-based conglomerate Torrent Group acquired a majority stake of 67% in the franchise, marking a significant change in ownership. The team that enjoys the world’s largest stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium, as its home base, have a title and a runners-up position to show in its first three years.
