The team has struggled to finish in the top four over the last five years and a lot of that has to be attributed to the constant chopping and changing. The team let go of their big buy of 2023, Harry Brook, and then poured money on Patrick Cummins at the auction table who replaced last year’s skipper Aiden Markram as the captain for the TATA IPL 2024. So, once again, like it has been for the last few years, the team will have to start from scratch with a new leadership group at the top.

Strengths – The team possesses the most powerful lineup of foreign players. Whichever four make it to the playing XI, one is bound to feel that the four left out deserved equally to be in the XI. The team’s pace attack consists of three very different kind of Indian bowlers in Bhuvneshwar, Natarajan and Umran and if utilized properly by Captain Cummins, the trio can be quite potent.

Weaknesses – Due to constant chopping and changing and a new leadership group pretty much every year, it’s hard to see a culture develop in the dressing room. As the success of teams like Chennai and Mumbai tell us, a strong culture is directly proportional to a team’s success, irrespective of the profile of the players in the squad.

Patrick Cummins comes in with a big reputation, having won all the major trophies for Australia in the recent past. However, his record as a T20 bowler don’t make for great reading and the team can once again face a leadership crisis if Cummins doesn’t come into his own in TATA IPL 2024.

There have been two teams that have represented the city in the Indian T20 League. The first team finished at the bottom of the table in the inaugural season before going on to lift the trophy in the next. They were replaced by another team from the city in 2013 which enjoyed a good run in the tournament for the most part. The team managed to make it to the playoffs in their first ever season in 2013. The following two seasons didn’t go too well for the franchise but they staged a remarkable comeback in 2016 led by David Warner and went on to win the title by beating Bangalore in a high-scoring final. The team made it to the playoffs again in the next year but couldn’t proceed further and in 2018 made it to the final, only to finish as the runners-up as Chennai emerged winners.

They did make it to playoffs in the subsequent season too but performances dipped drastically for the side in the seasons post Covid.That resulted in a lot of chopping and changing and gradually, the core that was responsible for the team’s golden run wasn’t part of the squad any longer. The subsequent seasons have seen the team struggle as they have changed captains and coaches every season without any success. The coach-captain duo of Aiden Markram and Brian Lara oversaw a disastrous season where the team finished in last place on the points table. This year, World Cup winning captain and coach Patrick Cummins and Daniel Vettori have been roped in by the franchise and will try to turn around the team’s fortunes in TATA IPL 2024 with some big stars like Travis Head and Heinrich Klassen.
